Do I need to start over?
Feeling like you were on track at one point and now you've let your healthy practices slip as you've changed things up in your life?
Maybe you've had a really positive practice in the past where you prioritized yourself in the mornings - making time for mindfulness, or making sure you were sleeping well, eating healthy, working out, and managing stress in a healthy way.
But now you seem a bit disconnected and inconsistent with those practices.
Maybe you moved, maybe your family has so much more going on in these months, maybe you forgot the true benefits these practices have for you, or maybe you got comfortable doing other things.
Now is a great time to have a reset (realistically, any time is good for a reset - even in the middle of your day!)
Healthy practices need to be built first before they're perfected. So start with something that's exciting, easy, and simple. Do 2 minutes of meditation, workout for 10 minutes, make one healthy snack per day (or meal prep them for a week), put a meeting in your calendar for 15 minutes of focused work, or take a short walk in the evening after dinner to clear your head and connect with the outdoors.
Our lives have a ton of fluctuation in them, and being able to reset your current circumstances and "start over" is actually a really amazing skill. Being able to recognize where you're at and identify what direction you want to go in instead, will make you a more flexible, confident, intuitive, and patient person.
If you have a "bad" day - restart it at lunch.
If you have a "bad" week - make 20 minutes where you sit with emotions, practice gratitude, let out some anger, create, sing, yell, pout, and express some things that are holding you back.
If you react in a way you didn't think was good or healthy - take a quick timeout to notice where you're at in the moment, note what you could have done differently, what pattern you might be running, and what you'd like to do instead.
If you feel like you've regressed, note that we need different things at different points in our lives, and your needs change from moment to moment. With self-compassion, choose something healthy for tomorrow.
If you feel overwhelmed with too many choices or not enough options - know you can reach out to for guidance, perspective, and help.
I've recently found and created some text prompts that you can use to send to your friends when you're struggling and don't know what to say: if you want me to send them over, submit an email at the bottom of my homepage and I'll get them to you!
Starting over isn’t a bad thing. There’s a concept I use in my own life and with my clients that says “there’s no such thing as failure, only feedback.” You can think of it like the phrase Thomas Edison used when creating the light bulb - “I haven’t failed; I’ve just found hundreds of ways that didn’t work.” A “failure” is teaching you something and as you develop a perspective and a trusting that you can develop better practices based on what you learn, your outlook on what happens to you gets a little more exciting because you’ll be looking for more opportunities, rather than being afraid of what might happen instead.
As always, if you are struggling with getting your mind in the right place or getting started (or restarted) in a healthy place - get some outside perspective. Friends, family, dog, therapists, coaches, teachers, butterflies.
I’ve got a growing referral network if you’re interested in reaching out.
Have a beautiful day and happy starting!
